Law Courts Library

Introduction

The Law Courts Library is the main law resource for the Law Courts and provides legal literature, reference and research materials and services to the Judiciary and court staff in the pursuit of the administration of justice.

Law Librarian

The Law Librarian is Mr. Victor Villarin. He can be reached on Tel: 345-244-3876 or by email to Victor.Villarin@judicial.ky.

Mr. Villarin also manages the law libraries of Truman Bodden Law School, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and Attorney General’s Chambers and therefore he is not always physically present in the Law Courts Library during the course of the week. Library Collection

The Law Courts Library has a physical collection of more than 5,000 volumes, including a selection of Cayman Islands legal materials (e.g., judgments and rulings of the senior courts, statutes and regulations). The collection mainly comprises of leading law reports of England and Wales and Caribbean Community, and forms and precedents.

The physical collection is supplemented by electronic resources – available to Law Courts staff only – facilitating access to over 150 legal databases. These include full-text law reports, journals, case citators, legislation, loose-leaf services and more.

Rules of Use

Attorneys may use the Law Courts Library for reference purposes only. Members of the general public are allowed to use the library with the permission of the Court Administrator. Nevertheless, the library welcomes the opportunity to assist the general public and other government departments in legal research, for which the following services may be offered:

  • Answering questions regarding the library and its collection;
  • Assistance with legal research;
  • Assistance with locating law-related materials with specific citation or reference;
  • Assistance with locating relevant printed legal resources within the library such as statutes, cases, court rules, legal encyclopedias, form books and treatises;
  • Instruction on effective use of print resources;
  • Referral of patrons to appropriate agencies;
  • Furnishing of limited photocopy and scanned copy of  print resources when requested by specific citation or reference; this service is restricted by copyright law.

Make sure to plan your visit to the Law Court Library when the Law Librarian is scheduled to be present (i.e., Monday or Friday) so that you can be assisted in person. Refer to Law Librarian’s weekly schedule for contact details.
