Chief Justice Margaret Ramsay-Hale and the Cayman Islands Judiciary are pleased to congratulate Sir Anthony Smellie KCMG KC on his appointment as a member of His Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council.
The fact of this appointment is a fitting recognition of Sir Anthony’s long and distinguished career as a leading jurist in these Islands. His passion for the law and for jurisprudential excellence has always been the driving force which underpinned his role as Chief Justice of the Cayman Islands and his work as a Judge in all capacities.
The esteem and honour which such a prestigious appointment embodies is a testament to the clear dedication of his intellect and commitment to jurisprudence in this jurisdiction as well as beyond these shores.
Sir Anthony’s contribution to the study and practice of law – and, indeed, to the pursuit of the overall interests of justice – spans almost fifty years. These are decades which indelibly record his work as a Crown Counsel, as Solicitor General, as a Judge, as Chief Justice of the Cayman Islands for twenty-five years and as a Justice of Appeal in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. And so, this new and distinguished appointment is a truly well-deserved recognition of Sir Anthony’s mastery of the law, his independence as a judge, his judicial leadership and his enormous contribution to the jurisprudence of the Cayman Islands.
As Sir Anthony is welcomed into the august judicial fold of His Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council, we record with warmth and immeasurable pride, our sincere best wishes for his continued success.
